The Fountain of Truth
"The power of accurate observation is often called cynicism by those who don't have it." -- George Bernard Shawand:
"A cynic is an idealist who's been stabbed in the back too many times." -- unknown
Muzzle Energy Computer is an HTML page I wrote that uses JavaScript to calculate energy and "efficacy" of ammunition. You can fill in weight, velocity, and diameter and it computes energy and efficacy (energy times area). It has buttons that fill in the numbers for some common calibers. Check it out.
PatriotPetitions.com - Reject Renewal of Feinstein-Schumer Gun-Control Act - a petition to "President George Bush, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist." When I read this last week, I was unwilling to sign it, so I wrote the following letter explaining why:
To: info@patriotpetitions.usThe removed the word "sporting". I signed it.
Subject: AW Ban petition
From: "Bill St. Clair"
Date: Fri, 16 May 2003 14:59:58 -0400

I would sign this petition, but for one word.
"I am appalled that President Bush has reiterated his support for this assault on my Constitutional right as a law abiding citizen, to own a semi- automatic sporting rifle for lawful purposes."
"Sporting" has nothing whatsoever to do with the second amendment. We should never mention it in that context. Strike this one word, and I'll sign your petition. The second amendment exists to ensure that we the people always have the power to defend ourselves from tyrants, especially tyrants in our own government.

Jonas Conti at gooff.com - I am Fearless - In memory of Rachel Corrie. Amen. [whatreallyhappened]
Gerard Holmgren at 911-strike.com - Debunking conspiracy theorists' paranoid fantasies about Sept. 11 - may be fiction, or not, but well done in any case. [whatreallyhappened]
One of the wilder stories circulating about Sept 11, and one that has attracted something of a cult following amongst conspiracy buffs is that it was carried out by 19 fanatical Arab hijackers, masterminded by an evil genius named Osama bin Laden, with no apparent motivation other than that they "hate our freedoms."
Never a group of people to be bothered by facts, the perpetrators of this cartoon fantasy have constructed an elaborately woven web of delusions and unsubstantiated hearsay in order to promote this garbage across the internet and the media to the extent that a number of otherwise rational people have actually fallen under its spell.
Normally I don't even bother debunking this kind of junk, but the effect that this paranoid myth is beginning to have requires a little rational analysis, in order to consign it to the same rubbish bin as all such silly conspiracy theories.
These crackpots even contend that the extremist Bush regime was caught unawares by the attacks, had no hand in organizing them, and actually would have stopped them if it had been able. Blindly ignoring the stand down of the US air-force, the insider trading on airline stocks - linked to the CIA, the complicit behavior of Bush on the morning of the attacks, the controlled demolition of the WTC, the firing of a missile into the Pentagon and a host of other documented proofs that the Bush regime was behind the attacks, the conspiracy theorists stick doggedly to a silly story about 19 Arab hijackers somehow managing to commandeer 4 planes simultaneously and fly them around US airspace for nearly 2 hours ,crashing them into important buildings, without the US intelligence services having any idea that it was coming, and without the Air Force knowing what to do.
The Fountain of Truth is Doug Newman's home on the web. He has a great links page and a good page of his own one-liners. He has written lots of articles for Strike the Root. From his exquisite Things I Wish I Had Said page:
"To be GOVERNED is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so. To be GOVERNED is to be at every operation, at every transaction noted, registered, counted, taxed, stamped, measured, numbered, assessed, licensed, authorized, admonished, prevented, forbidden, reformed, corrected, punished. It is, under pretext of public utility, and in the name of the general interest, to be place under contribution, drilled, fleeced, exploited, monopolized, extorted from, squeezed, hoaxed, robbed; then, at the slightest resistance, the first world of compliant, to be repressed, fined, vilified, harassed, hunted down, abused, clubbed, disarmed, bound, choked, imprisoned, judged, condemned, shot, deported, sacrificed, sold, betrayed; and to crown all, mocked, ridiculed, derided, outraged, dishonored. That is government; that is its justice; that is its morality." -- P.J. Proudhonand:
"The poorest man may, in his cottage, bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail, its roof may shake; the wind may blow though it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England may not enter; all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement." -- William Pittand:
Kansas Senate Prayerand:
Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good," but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We confess that:
We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Pluralism.
We have exploited the poor and called it the Lottery.
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.
We have killed our unborn and called it choice.
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.
We have abused power and called it politics.
We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of speech.
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.
Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent to direct us to the center of your will and to openly ask these things in the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. -- Pastor Joe Wright
The response was immediate. A number of legislators walked out during the prayer in protest. In 6 short weeks, Central Christian Church, where Reverend Wright is pastor, logged more than 5,000 phone calls with only 47 of those calls responding negatively. The church is now receiving international requests for copies of this prayer from India, Africa, and Korea. Commentator Paul Harvey aired this prayer on his radio program "The Rest of the Story" and received a larger response to this program than any other he has ever aired. With the Lord's help, may this prayer sweep over our nation and wholeheartedly become our desire so that we again can be called, "...one nation under God..."
One Solitary Life
"He was the most famous and successful man who has ever lived. His teachings are followed by hundreds of millions of people. He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. Until He was 30, He worked in a carpenter shop, and then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He wrote no books. He held no office. He never owned a home. He was never in a big city. He never traveled 200 miles from the place where He was born. He never did any of the things that usually accompany greatness.
"The authorities condemned His teachings. His friends deserted him. One betrayed Him to His enemies for a paltry sum. One denied Him. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves. While He was dying, His executioners gambled for the only piece of clothing He owned on earth: His coat. When He was dead, He was taken down and laid in a borrowed grave.
"Nineteen centuries have come and gone, yet today He is the crowning glory of the human race, the adored leader of hundreds of millions of the earth's inhabitants. All the armies that ever marched and all the navies that ever set sail and all the parliaments that ever sat and all the rulers that ever reigned -- put together -- have not affected the life of man upon this earth so profoundly as that ONE SOLITARY LIFE." -- Anonymous
Barton Gellman at The Boston Globe - Looters ransack seven facilities; US fears loss of data, materials - bad news a week ago from Iraq. [email]
BAGHDAD - Seven nuclear facilities in Iraq have been damaged or destroyed by the looting that began in the first days of April, when US ground forces thrust into Baghdad, according to US investigators and others with detailed knowledge of their work.
The Bush administration fears that technical documents, sensitive equipment, and possibly radiation sources have been scattered.
If so, materials to build a nuclear or radiological bomb may have been spread and public health may be at risk.
