Illegal Handgun? What's That?

# eBaumsWorld - The End of the World - Flash video. I think I've seen it before, but it was still funny. [root]

I watched Pitch Black the other night. Vin Diesel, as Riddick, and a cast of unknowns crash land on a never-dark planet and discover why everything there is dead. My favorite quote:

Imam: Because you do not believe in God does not mean God does not believe in - .

Riddick: Think someone could spend half their life in a slam with a horse bit in their mouth and not believe? Think he could start out in some liquor store trash bin with an umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and not believe? Got it all wrong, holy man. I absolutely believe in God... And I absolutely hate the fucker.

# Charles Schumer & Hillary Rodham Clinton at The New York Post - Illegal Guns: Congress' Job BugMeNot - a plea for federal laws to help find the legal sellers of guns later used in crimes. I sent the following letter to the editor. Click here for KABA comments. [kaba]

New York's U.S. Senators Schumer & Clinton shoveled their usual anti-gun drivel in The Post on 1/6.

Gun sales can be traced only to their last legal sale through a Federal Firearms License holder. Considering that seller somehow responsible for later criminal use makes no sense, and is exactly why Congress passed the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

And what's this about "illegal handguns"? The Second Amendment says that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Illegal seems pretty infringed to me. But I've misplaced my copy of The Hoplophobe's Dictionary. I guess it depends on what the meaning of the word "infringed" is.

# Sunni Maravillosa - Ayoob Just Lost Some Cred with Me - Sunni takes Massad Ayoob to task for his "small guns for women" comment in the article I linked to yesterday. She has a point. But now I want to see how much of a recoil junky she really is. I want to watch her shoot my magnum 00 buck "bear load" through my pistol grip Winchester 1200. I think it's a trip, but I don't do it many times in one session. Slugs, on the other hand, are a piece of cake. [sunni]

# New Hampshire Underground - SS Card Burn - QuickTime movie of a handful of New Hampshire residents lightheartedly burning their Social Security cards in front of the Social Security Administration office in Keene. They also have 17-minute movie on their page about their Second Annual U.N. Flag Burn, which took place on December 18, 2005. Their home page and forums are at [clairefiles]

# - New Hampshire bill aims to prevent Katrina-style gun seizures - don't know its chances of passage, but HB1639-FN would make it a felony, punishable by a minimum fine of $5,000 and a minimum of 30 days in prison, to confiscate arms during an emergency. [root]

The bill reads: "Any law enforcement officer, person acting as a law enforcement officer, or other public official who confiscates or attempts to confiscate lawfully carried or lawfully owned firearms in this state during a declared state of emergency shall be charged with a class A felony."

In the chaos following Hurricane Katrina, various government agencies - including Federal Marshalls - made systematic attempts to sweep New Orleans of guns - even if that meant entering the homes of law abiding gun owners. The move did not cause widespread outrage in most states. But New Hampshire residents reacted by burning a FEMA flag in front of a local Federal building. They also circulated a petition pledging resistance if such a move were ever attempted in the "Live Free or Die" state....a place where guns are part of the culture and gun laws are the second-loosest in the nation.

# Joel Spolsky - The Perils of JavaSchools - Joel bitches about the dumbing down of computer science curricula. Many schools have switched from C and Scheme to Java. They no longer teach pointer manipulation or recursion. So they don't weed out people who don't have programming minds. [joel]

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We had to get up at six in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down the mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt." -- Monty Python's Flying Circus, Four Yorkshiremen
