Circumcision

From smith2004:
For many years, my favorite cartoon came from Penthouse, a guy in Hebrew garb standing on top of a mountain, raising his hands and looking up. "Now let me get this straight: you want us to cut the ends off of our dicks?"

I only learned a decade later that it had been written by my very good friend Rex "Baloo" May.

From smith2004:

"Imagine if all of life were determined by majority rule. Every meal would be a pizza. Every pair of pants, even those in a Brooks Brothers suit, would be stone-washed denim. Celebrity diet and exercise books would be the only thing on the shelves at the library. And since women are a majority of the population, we'd all be married to Mel Gibson." -- P.J. O'Rourke

# Sunni Maravillosa - Milestones and Millstones - thoughts on the eighteenth birthday of Sunni's stepson. [sunni]

I suppose it's natural that my mind revisited milestones of my own, but his concern over his birthday contributed to it; he apparently feared that because he's now 18, we'd either kick him out of the house or start charging rent. You'd think I'd be smarter about such things, given how I took so many milestones in my life and made them millstones -- things that weighted me down instead of enabling me to grow, experience more, or be happier. But I almost certainly contributed to his stress over birthday number 18 -- unwittingly, of course, because I do love him and want to see him succeed. But like every human, I relied on my past, my preferences, my biases to color what I thought he should be doing. In trying to play my part of good parent, I probably overdid it, focusing on an inflexible, silly timeline instead of what he needs.

# Charley Hardman - branch davidian trial transcript - commentary on the Branch Davidian Trial Transcripts, a record of the "trial" of the Waco survivors.

few things have disgusted me so much as reading the transcript of the trial of the branch davidian survivors. apparently, i'm not alone, as it's reported that timothy mcveigh (alleged oklahoma city bomber) initially sought to kill walter smith, the "judge" at the trial. after being unavailable for quite a while, many transcript pages, hosted elsewhere now, have resurfaced via the mt. carmel site, which, as it was previously, is quite flaky.
