Dirty Magazines
Soon after being transferred to a new duty station, my Marine husband called home to tell me he would be late - again. He went on to say that dirty magazines had been discovered in the platoon's quarters and they had to discipline the whole squad. I launched into a tirade, arguing that many men had pictures hanging in their quarters at our previous post, so his new platoon should not be penalized for something trivial.
My husband calmly listened to my gripes and then explained, "Honey, dirty magazines: the clips from their rifles had not been cleaned."

A comment from yesterday on William L. Anderson's Obedience and Subservience:
Sergeant Mac | 06-15-2005 16:40I watched the videos again, just to check. After the officer demanded that the lady get out of the car, he told her that she had a broken windshield and a broken tail light and a suspended license, in addition to driving 51 in a 35 mph zone. Only after he had tasered her did he tell her she was under arrest. It's no wonder she wondered about being bossed around. I suppose Sergeant Mac believes that we peons must follow whatever commands a cop gives. I disagree, in spades. As for whether a suspended license is an arrestable offence, I guess the Boynton Beach cops think it is. It would have been awfully nice of the officer, however, to tell the lady that she was being arrested, and then to give her a little time to get used to the idea, before grabbing her arm or shooting her with his taser. I consider tasering to be torture. It certainly was for that lady. People have radically differing tolerances for electric shock. And though the officer claimed that she used force against him, he initiated the force by grabbing her. At that point, she was well within her rights to stop him, using whatever force was necessary. Pushing him away as she did certainly qualifies. The officer may have intended to arrest her, but he had not yet told her that she was under arrest, hence he had no authority to touch her. He was lucky she wasn't carrying. Proper behavior on seeing a gun pointed at you, regular or taser, by anybody, badge or not, is to double tap, and to continue firing until the threat is neutralized.
The author of that piece either failed to research, failed to notice, or simply failed to mention a few things.
1. She was speeding, 16 mph over, not just talking on a cell phone.
2. Her driver's license was suspended, suggesting a long litany of prior traffic problems.
3. She was being ARRESTED for driving under suspension, because that is the way it's handled, NOT by writing a ticket.
I know that you don't see any of the above as legitimate, but there it is.
Of course, I'm only saying what I think is proper. In reality, we peons are not allowed to use force against a cop, ever. We occasionally get away with self defense when the cop is way over the line, but not often. Most of the time, cops can shoot us or beat us or taser us with impunity. They are above the law.
And you're right, Sergeant Mac, I don't consider arresting somebody for having a suspended license, or for not having any license or registration of any kind, to be legitimate. No licensing or registration requirement is valid for anything, ever. Crime consists of harming a person or stealing or damaging their property. Period. There are no other crimes. Never were. Never will be. But that's my opinion of what's right, not the reality of this fascist country. But I have chosen not to personally fight the driving license battle, except with these words.
Anyway, Sergeant Mac, you didn't leave me any web or email address, so I have no way of talking with you except here. Are you a regular reader of my little weblog, or did you just happen by? Are you an active duty cop, or retired? Do you read these pages as part of your job or just personal interest?
There are four pages of High Road discussion about this case here.
# Claire Wolfe at Backwoods Home Magazine - Mrs. Nat Does Dope - with a little cajoling, her friends convince an old lady getting chemotherapy for her cancer. She doesn't feel a thing, or so she says, but her appetite returns. Claire introduced me to PeterMcWilliams.org, a memorial for Peter McWilliams, who held his AIDS at bay for many years with cannabis and an anti-viral cocktail, until a Kalifornia judge forbade him the use of his medicine.
I ask you: Who are the goofy ones? The hapless dope smokers or their persecutors who've been gettin' way too high for way too long on their own obviously addictive power?

# BBC News - Cannabis test 'positive' for AMs - The Ion Track drug detection system is so sensitive that it will test positive on your hands if you use a doorknob that was touched by someone who used drugs, even after you wash them. It tested positive on a number of British assembly members who participated in a demonstration. A drug-sniffing dog on steroids. Another reason the cops can use to hassle you about behavior that harms nobody but yourself. [saltypig]
The machine is used by Gwent Police to test people queuing for a night club, and to detect traces of drugs in a house where the actual substances had already been removed.
A spokesman for Gwent Police said: "It must be borne in mind that anyone taking the test can test positive as a result of cross contamination."
