iPod Can't Connect? Check the Date
A friend of mine asked me to look at her iPod. She told me that since she loaded some music onto it, it wouldn't connect to Netflix, Pandora, or the App Store. I verified the problem: failure to connect. I played in Safari a little. Connected fine to google.com, but said there was a certificate problem with netflix.com. I tried to find something wrong with the CA roots, but couldn't see any way to view or change that. I noticed that the time was wrong. Eventually, I put the two together. Her iPod's time had reset to 1970, which is way before the start date of any current SSL certificate. Her apps were getting a connect error due to an invalid certificate. I set the date and time, and voila, all was well. Why the iPod doesn't get time from the network, I don't know. But it doesn't.
