Gary Marbut at KeepAndBearArms.com - Angel Shamaya, the founder of KeepAndBearArms.com, and tireless Second Amendment activist, has been arrested in the Detroit area, for "possession of firearms not properly registered under Michigan law." Mr Marbut requests that you fill out this form letter, adding, if you wish, a single sentence of personal comment, and email it back to him. He intends to present them to the judge as evidence of Angel's character. David Codrea posted a copy of Mr. Marbut's message, commentary from Nicki Fellenzer, and this:

UPDATE:
I just got off the phone with the Oakland County Sheriff to see if I could help in any way with bail. Unfortunately, the attendant told me Angel has not been arraigned yet, so there is no public information they can share, and that the best thing to do would be to call back tomorrow night. I told the deputy he had a good man in custody and to please see to it that Angel was safe.

It took my computer a long time to connect to www.marbut.com for the form letter, so I've copied it below in case its slashdotted, er... kaba'd, when you read this. First, where to send it:

You may email your completed letter, either as an attached MSWord (.doc) file, or pasted into the body of your email, either to newslinks@keepandbeararms.com or to mssa@mtssa.org. So we can pick it out from our many other emails, PLEASE make the SUBJECT of your email: "Angel reference." We will see that these letters get to Angel's attorney ASAP.

And the letter itself:

Re: Mr. Angel Shamaya

Dear Judge;

Mr. Angel Shamaya is before your court on a misdemeanor charge of having been in possession of one or more firearms not properly registered under Michigan laws.

I want you to know that Mr. Shamaya is an upstanding American citizen. I don't know whether or not he violated Michigan law, but I do know that he is generally a decent, law-abiding person. He is certainly not some sort of scuzz-ball, wannabe terrorist, nor is he a violent or disreputable person. He is one of the good guys in our society.

Please afford Mr. Shamaya every respect and courtesy you would any other beyond-reproach, well-known, upstanding member of your community.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely yours,

(Insert name, mail address, and contact phone number, as with the example below.)

Possession of an unregistered handgun is a low-court misdemeanor in Michigan. The usual action taken [I am told] generally consists of the loss of the gun and a small fine. Being hauled off to jail is very unusual. Normally A summons is issued. Unless of course the item is stolen property or other circumstances are involved.
This whole situation is very odd. Thanks for bringing it public notice Bill.
