From smith2004:
"Corrupted by wealth and power, your government is like a restaurant with only one dish. They've got a set of Republican waiters on one side and a set of Democratic waiters on the other side. But no matter which set of waiters brings you the dish, the legislative grub is all prepared in the same Wall Street kitchen." -- Huey Long

# Google News - Toledo Riots - riots broke out in Toledo, Ohio yesterday afternoon in response to a planned neo-nazi march. The crowd threw rocks at police, vandalized cars and stores, and torched a bar. Fox News' copy of the AP account is here. [clairefiles]

# Bruce Schneier's Cryptogram - Phishing - why California's new anti-phising legislation won't help and what would. [cryptogram]

# Bruce Schneier's Cryptogram - DUI Cases Thrown Out Due to Closed-Source Breathalyzer - judges in Seminole County, Florida, have ruled that if a plaintiff asks for the source code of a breath-alcohol machine, and the state can't provide it, the accused walks. Judges in other counties have ruled the opposite. [cryptogram]

# Bruce Schneier's Cryptogram - Automatic License Plate Scanners - the city of Boston is evaluating technology from AutoVu that reads license plates visible through two cameras mounted on top of a white SUV and matches against a database of overdue parking tickets. When it finds a match, they attach a Denver boot to one of the vehicle's wheels. Mr. Schneier calls this "wholesale surveillance" [clairefiles]

# DontBurnMyFlag at The High Road - Aggravating Police experience - an account of an encounter with police at a train station in Philadelphia. Some cops chimed in with "standard procedure" and "lawful orders" gibberish. I posted the following, and "pax" closed the thread shortly thereafter. [clairefiles]

Get used to it guys. In Amerika, the police can do anything they want. Anything. Your best bet is to avoid them like the plague, but if you encounter one, you have two choices: bend over and grease up or shoot, shovel, and shut up.

Every cop has sworn to uphold and defend the Constitution. That means no searches, ever, without a proper warrant or probable cause for an arrest. Not at courthouses. Not at airports. Not at traffic stops. Not on the street. My name ain't Terry. But the courts won't enforce this, so if you care about it, you've gotta enforce it yourself.

Isn't living in a police state fun?
