Robert B. Dewey distorted the meaning of the militia clause of the Second Amendment in his August 14 letter to the editor.
10 USC 311 defines the militia of the United States as including "all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and... under 45 years of age who are... citizens of the United States..."
Militia members are expected to be prepared with individually-owned military weapons. Today that means at least a full-auto M16 rifle with 30-round magazines and, optionally, a grenade launcher, and a 9mm Beretta pistol with 15-round magazines.
Quoting L. Neil Smith, "Reread that pesky first clause of the Second Amendment. It doesn't say what any of us thought it said. What it says is that infringing the right of the people to keep and bears arms is treason. What else do you call an act that endangers 'the security of a free state'? And if it's treason, then it's punishable by death. I suggest due process, speedy trials, and public hangings."

# I joined Netflix yesterday. I've become tired of driving fifteen miles each way to Hollywood video every five days. Netflix costs a couple dollars more per month, but has no late fees, ever. I can have three movies out at a time for $18/month + tax. You can get up to eight movies at a time for $6 more apiece per month. All postage paid both ways by Netflix. You update online a queue of movies you want to see, and as soon as you send one back, they send you the next one available in your queue. They have 25 mailing centers, so it's usually only one day each way for shipping. We'll see if that translates to two days each way to my place here in the boonies. And you get a two week trial period. Cancel before the first billing, and you pay nothing.
