Yawn!

Too many nights of too little sleep working on JMaze left Bill a very tired boy yesterday afternoon. So he stayed in bed from four in the afternoon until six this morning. Better. One more good night's sleep and he'll be back to his normal gruf self.

From survivalarts:

"...they knew their job was hazardous, they did it anyway, and by all accounts, they died doing what they wanted, and loved, to do. There are many more astronauts in the astronaut corps who, if a Shuttle was sitting on the pad tomorrow, fueled and ready to go, would eagerly strap themselves in and go, even with the inquiry still going on, because they know that it's flown over a hundred times without burning up on entry, and they still like the odds. And if yesterday's events made them suddenly timorous, there is a line of a hundred people eagerly waiting to replace each one that would quit, each more than competent and adequate to the task. America, and the idea of America, is an unending cornucopia of astronaut material." -- Rand Simberg

From Chuck Muth's News & Views:

"...Prison inmates tell Justice Department interviewers that while committing a crime, running into a citizen armed to defend himself is one of their greatest fears. And so it should be. Mr. Hynes, and other gun control supporters, please take note - criminals should have to worry about the consequences of the defensive use of guns, not homeowners like Ron Dixon." -- Rich Lowry

Susan Callaway at Sierra Times - Hail Columbia, Farewell - the Columbia disaster should be a wake up call that life is not safe or fair. Never was. Never will be. The solution: voluntaryism, of course. [rrnd]

We are all very sad for the families and friends of those who were lost this morning on the Columbia Shuttle. The loss of any life like this is tragic and hard to accept, but it has always been the price that may be required of those who dare to leave the earth or defy the laws of gravity and speed as happens daily on our roads and freeways.

So, what does it mean? It means that life is not "safe", or "fair" or anything like easy for anyone in the long run. Humans like to be safe, want things to be fair, and the easy way out is the choice of most of humanity, but those are the exceptions, not the rule in real life. They are the force that drives us to work for better things and invent all the wonderful devices that have made our lives so much better than our caveman ancestors.

We have made the horrible mistake of letting our politicians and academics convince us that, if we just give the government the power and the money, they can make life safe, fair, and take away the burden of personal responsibility for our lives and families. I hope that a great many people are beginning to see this for the terrible lie and deception that it is.

...

Each person must mind their own business and not expect to control anything but their own business. Each must commit to nonaggression and participate in the removal of those who attack others, both by self defense and by cooperation with the community in shunning or otherwise isolating those who hurt others. There would be no problem with the busybodies if most people refused to be herded or influenced by them. There would be no way for bad laws to be imposed on people if they refused to be imposed on and held whatever shred of government they allowed totally accountable for their actions.
