From this Firing Line thread:
I suspect the first thing St. Peter asked Bill Ruger after his admission on Saturday was, "Dude! Why didn't you make the Mini-30 take AK mags?"

From The Federalist:

Since when have we Americans been expected to bow submissively to authority and speak with awe and reverence to those who represent us? -- William O. Douglas
and:
At times it does seem a shame that Noah and his party didn't miss the boat. -- Mark Twain
and:
In the legal arena, material misrepresentations of fact are called 'fraud.' In Washington, such misrepresentations are called 'politics'. -- Ken Connor
and:
There are enough fools in Washington to destroy the country without any help from Muslim terrorists. -- Paul Craig Roberts

BartCop - Sweeping Powers - cartoon commentary on keeping the press in line in the Amerikan Security State. [brianf]

The Progressive via LizMichael.com - McCarthyism Watch - attempt to use cash to buy stamps without the US flag, get a visit with the local gendarmes and the postal inspector. [lizmichael]

Gordon Phillips at LizMichael.com - Happy Co-Dependence Day! - Patrick Henry's famous "liberty or death" speech was given after a preacher was whipped to death for refusing to take a license from the Crown. If only we had that preacher's fortitude today. Includes the text of the speech and commentary on how it was given by John Roane, a witness. [lizmichael]

Those who today apply for a marriage license, driver's license, fishing license, hunting license, occupational license, building permit, ad nauseam, would be well served to ponder the ramifications of their voluntary act.

Would that same executed preacher, were he alive today, rush to apply for a 501(c)(3) 'exemption' from the IRS? How many churchgoers today are prepared to pay the price of true liberty when it's easier to just pass the plate and 'write it off' next April 15th?

Valeria Williams at WFAA-TV via mercola.com - Congressman Calls for Criminal Penalties at Vaccine Mercury Hearings - Dan Burton (R-Indiana) is making waves about mercury in vaccines. Good for him. [lew]

David E. Scheim at campaignwatch.org - Trust or Hustle: The Bush Record - seems that the entire Bush family has been involved in financial scandals. Summaries, major media excerpts, links to full stories (most in fee-based archives). [brianf]

T.R. Reid at The Washington Post - Gun Course in U.S. Is Focus at British Terrorism Trial BugMeNot - A British man who offerred gun training at ranges in the U.S. has been arrested and charged with terrorism. A logical extension of the concept that self-defense is a crime in the UK. [zem]

Gun Owners of America - Great News! House Passes Strengthened Armed Pilots Bill - The House passed H.R. 4635, the "Arming Pilots Against Terrorism Act". This bill forces the Under Secretary of Transportation to establish a program for deputizing and training pilots in flight deck defense. It does not, however, place any time limit on pilots actually being deputized. Attention now turns to Senator Smith's S. 2554, which requires 500 pilots to be deputized by 120 days from its date of enactment.

Reuters via Marijuana Policy Project - Britain to relax laws against marijuana use - Well, the UK is at least getting this one right. [mpp]

Pressure from police, medical experts and politicians for Britain to take a less punitive approach has swayed Home Secretary David Blunkett, who is expected Wednesday to downgrade it to a low risk category C drug.

The downgrade -- making cannabis a Class C rather than Class B drug -- will put the drug in the same category as anabolic steroids and growth hormones and make possessing small amounts of it or smoking it in private a non-arrestable offense.
