New stuff at the bottom...

Happy 4th of July from my mother. I love you, Mom.

The Prisoner was a great TV show. I watched reruns for years. When I worked at Thinking Machines, we watched two episodes a week for 6 or 7 weeks. I remember that there were 13 episodes, but this site's episode guide says that there were 17. Great site! [unknown]

I read the rest of Imagine Freedom last night. Great stuff! Some quotes:

Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once.

The War on Drugs is over; the government lost.

In the ideal socialist state, power will not attract power freaks. People who make decisions will show not the slightest bias toward their own interests. There will be no way for a clever man to bend the institutions to serve his own ends. And the rivers will run uphill. -- David Friedman, 1973

It doesn't matter whether the coercive individuals or groups identify themselves as bandits, Mafia, Church, party, government, chief, Pharaoh, king, high priest or president. If they initiate force, they are all simply criminals, regardless of their aliases and pretensions. -- Jarret Wollstein, 1969

Serendipity - Prohibition: The So-Called War on Drugs: Lots of information on the war on freedom (er... some drugs). [brianf email]

bob lonsberry - Pataki Sells out Gun Owners: Mr Lonsberry is not sure, but he thinks it's now a felony to own certain semi-automatic rifles in New York state. If so, then he's a felon. He has one in his gun safe. [arms]

And if it is now against the law to own this firearm, will I obey that law?

Will I, like tens of thousands of other New Yorkers, be forced to choose between freedom and obedience? Will we be driven into illegality not by choice of our own, but by fiat of governmental tyranny?

I don't know, and it bothers me. It makes the whole gun thing real. It's not about arguments anymore, it's about the reality of my life. It's not the other guy they've come for, it is me. And it makes me a little sick in my stomach. I'm not sure what to do.

bob lonsberry - A Farewell to Elian: Very nice. I emailed a pointer to Sean Hackbarth of mind. I think he'll like it. I sure did.

I've added Mr. Lonsberry to the list of daily reads on my links page.

Kevin Tuma - Castro: cartoon commentary on Elian's trip back to Cuba.

Mike Shelton - Good Riddance: a similar idea.

AP - School Credit Given for Marijuana Work: Talk about justice! [market]

Maryland requires all public high school students to do volunteer work to graduate. How those students donate their time is largely left up to them.

So 18-year-old Scarlett Swerdlow decided to pass on the government internships and homeless shelters to work for a cause she fully supports: legalizing marijuana.

Patricia Neill at Sierra Times - Slave State America, c. 2000: It's been a long time since Patty's last article (at lew). Nice to see you again, Patty! [sierra]

No, mass America loves its chains. The chains might be constructed of Beanie Babies, McDonald hamburgers, "public education" and that blight upon the modern world, televison, but the chains are there and they are beloved. Comfort is an easy, wide road and it leads to slavery. We are an addicted people.

Jacob Sullum at Reason - Hate Haters: Mr. Sullum tells us why we should oppose hate crime legislation even though we abhor hate crimes. The reason that trumps all the others is:

The hate crime bill, which would allow federal prosecution of violent crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or disability, is unconstitutional as well as unnecessary. Congress is simply not authorized to transform such crimes into federal offenses.

Doug Bandow at the Cato Institute - 'Jackboot Liberalism' Residues: Komrade Klinton "represents a new political philosophy: jackboot liberalism." And how! Goes on to talk about the fourth-amendment-gutting landmines in the meth and bankruptcy bills. [market]

Feds Want Political Membership Records: The real story behind H.R.4762. The feds want to get the membership lists of GOA and NRA-ILA. ["arms"]

John Reinke at Keep And Bear Arms.com - "Wilding": One person with a gun could have stopped the mob violence in Central Park on June 11th. But it is illegal for a citizen to possess such a "citizenship tool" in NYC. [arms]

Those women, and all women, as well as the weak, the strong, the timid, and the average individual who might be confronted by these criminals, -- everyone should be besieging Albany and New York with the Second Amendment demanding to be armed -- legally, as is their God-given right.

Three new articles in The Libertarian series by Vin Suprynowicz:

  • Learning to nod in unison - Advice to the Clark County (Las Vegas) school board. Commentary on their helplessness in the face of government mandates.
  • Jews, come out - Neighbors complained about Rabbi Moshe Omer's Kabbalah services in his home on Saturdays, so the cops issued a citation. When he refused to sign it because his faith does not allow him to sign things on the Sabbath, they dragged him down to the police station, again against his religious tenets. A judge signed the citation, but the rabbi had to wait until dark to travel back home. Talk about clear abrogation of the first amendment...
And if an officer finally is sent out, we need men and women with the experience and judgment to calmly say, "If a car is blocking your driveway, we'll go knock and ask for it to be moved. But you want me to arrest the rabbi for conducting religious services on the sabbath? In his private home? Not in my America, pilgrim."
  • National study shows 'class-size reduction' does no good - Advice to Nevada's Governor Kenny Guinn on how to save the state money by eliminating ineffective programs.

Soup at MacEdition - The Death of Copyright: "Copyright is dead, a murder most foul, and the effect it's had on our society, civilization, and culture is heartbreaking." It isn't dead because it doesn't exist. It's dead because it has become completely one-sided in the favor of the large corporations that distribute artists' work. [script]

The "rights" afforded the owners of copyright are so out of control, Girl Scouts can't even sing "God Bless America" around the campfire without getting express written consent and paying a royalty You think I'm kidding?

...

Stupid artists are suing 300,000 fans for sharing music. Smart artists that have done the math are already figuring out how to make money in an age where they don't have to hook up with corporations that sell records at shopping malls across the country.

Stonent at Slashdot - Memory Problems (And Fixes) For Palm-OS Devices Some 8MB Palm IIIc, IIIxe, and Vx units and some Handspring Visors have a faulty memory chip. Palm has diagnostics and a fix here. They check your serial number to see if you might be affected. I might. They have a 35 minute diagnostic to see if you ARE affected. I haven't run it yet. They have a software fix. [/.]

Mike Pylar at WorldNetDaily via Cannabis News - Peter McWilliams, Lamented: Nice to see this at WorldNetDaily. They have a mixed record on drug war commentary. [cn]

Orange County Register via Cannabis News - Libertarians Convene: The Libertarian Party national convention has begun in Annaheim, California. By Sunday, they will have chosen their candidate for president. C-SPAN is covering the convention. [cn]
