Two new articles in The Libertarian series by Vin Suprynowicz:
  • {@Flag Burning}: Playing to the galleries - I pointed at the Sierra Times version of this story on Tuesday. How the flag burning amendment violates our inalienable God-given right to freedom of speech. The measure was defeated yesterday at 4:40pm by a vote of 63 for and 37 against: 4 votes shy of taking a large chunk out of the first amendment. Maybe I'll read this part of yesterday's Congressional record later.
  • {@Prevailing Wage}: Wage fraud revealed - "... the process by which Nevada's 'prevailing wages' are set is a fraud... The only long-term solution is to repeal these {@prevailing wage} laws, entirely."

ACLU - Fight for the Flag! The ACLU reports on the defeat of the flag burning amendment. [faisal]

"FreeNet is a peer-to-peer network designed to allow the distribution of information over the Internet in an efficient manner, without fear of censorship. Freenet is completely decentralized, meaning that there is no person, computer, or organisation in control of Freenet or essential to its operation." Written in Java. Looks neat.

AP via Freedom Forum Online - Judge criticizes NYC's 'heavy stream of First Amendment' cases: Herr Rudy has been a constant enemy of the first amendment. Judge Guido Calabresi of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals slaps his hand.

I found a pointer to liberzine.com yesterday. Looks worth watching. "Liberzine has been called a 'libertarian Salon.com or Suck.com.' It publishes a daily article in its front page with all its previously published articles archived."

O'Reilly Network - Why is the Jini Bottled Up? "The concensus at the Third Jini Community Meeting in Santa Clara on Tuesday, March 29, 2000, was that the biggest obstacle to Sun's Jini was, well, Sun itself. Specifically, the problem is Sun's quasi-ownership of Jini and the terms of the Sun Community Source License." [script]

James P. Gray at latimes.com - Is Our Drug Policy Failing? Don't Ask: Barry McCaffrey visited Orange County recently and fielded a handful of questions about his war on some drugs. Judge Gray was rebuffed in the one question he managed to ask about California's Proposotion 215. He writes about the questions he "would have asked our country's spokesperson for the status quo, if only he had had the time." [wnd]

Jon Katz at SlashDot - Geek Profiling: The Next W.A.V.E.: Jon reports on the newest Nazi youth group encouraging kids to rat on other kids. [wnd]

My letter made the Sierra Times Mail Bag today. It's the one about "Dear Peace Officer" signed "B. St. C". That link will rot by tomorrow, but the archived copy should appear here in a day or two. [sierra]

Karl F. Auerbach at Sierra Times - I'm Bored: "I'm running this test. It's a simple test. I've loaded the gun, I've placed it on my family-room coffee table, and now I'm watching it carefully for any sign of violence. Any sign at all." Concerning Smith & Wesson, "Does it really make sense for any business to answer the 'concerns' of non-buyers while completely ignoring the wants and needs of its customers?" [sierra]

J.J. Johnson at Sierra Times - Back from the Dead: part one of J.J.'s nightmare in a Las Vegas hospital. They misinterpreted his indigestion as a heart attack, and it took a long time to convince the hospital's powers-that-be to let him go. Part two tomorrow. [sierra]
