OpenCyc 1.0
Amid very little fanfare, OpenCyc 1.0 was released last month. This is the free version of Doug Lenat's Cyc knowledge representation technology. In 1992 or thereabouts, a couple of guys worked on Cyc at the Apple Cambridge Research Lab, using the new virtual-memory-friendly incremental garbage collector for Macintosh Common Lisp. Apparently, Lenat and friends have been hard at work since then (since before then, actually), and finally have something good enough to call version 1.0. Big download. Over 200 megs for Linux. My server machine is fetching it as I type. You talk to it via a Java API, its web server, or by typing CycL forms (lisp-like syntax) to its telnet server. Slashdot discussion. [slashdot]
