Gun Lobby First
The New York Times printed an editorial yesterday about House passage of H.R. 6842, the "Second Amendment Enforcement Act" (click the last link in the list to read the most recent text). I sent a letter to the editor, but I'm holding back its publication here in order to follow the Times' rule that letters to the editor cannot be published first in any other medium. [scopeny]

Second Amendment First
What a lot of rhetoric there was in the Times' September 18 editorial on the long overdue legislation passed by the House to restore the right of the people in the District of Columbia to keep and bear arms.
The only sensible gun control I'm aware of is the abilty to hit what you're aiming at. Extraordinary firepower sounds to me like the 30mm cannon on an Apache helicopter, certainly not a handgun with a regular capacity magazine. And gun registration only aids the police in tracking down law-abiding gun owners; criminals don't register their guns.
Hopefully, Senator Feinstein's attempt to block the bill in the Senate will fail, and DC's infringements will be knocked down a notch. Too bad the US Congress can't eliminate New York City's draconian gun rights infringements.
