Fever Is Your Friend
There is also at least one theory that the problem behind nearly all systemic illness is the indiscriminate taking of aspirin to hold down a fever. The fever is treated as part of the illness, when it is in fact the body's defense mechanism to fight it; if you suppress the fever at the wrong stage of recovery, all you do is allow a virus to propagate in peace, and then it comes back in fuller force. There's even a rather long webpage that outlines the effects of widespread use of aspirin (for fever reduction) explaining how and why the 1918 Flu was so devastating, and how we might avoid a repeat, simply by letting the fever perform its proper role in healing.
# Jorge at Sunni and the Conspirators - Patents - an argument against patents. I'm still undecided on the concept of intellectual property. I think there are real benefits to patents, but they are being grossly misused these days. But Jorge argues against patents from both a utility and a property perspective. [sunni]
# Shawn Tully at CNN Money - The king of real estate's cashing out - Tom Barrack, "arguably the world's greatest real estate investor," is getting out of the U.S. market. He says it's because there are too many amateurs pushing up prices. [grabbe]
# Ron Paul at LewRockwell.com - Will the Estate Tax Ever Be Repealed? - not bloody likely, says Dr. Paul. In the Senate, pork trumps thrift and hard work. [lew]
The estate tax, more accurately known as the death tax because it is levied when a taxpayer dies, confiscates anywhere from 37% to 55% of a individual's assets. While these rates are unconscionable, the death tax also represents an especially galling form of double taxation. Americans already pay federal and state income taxes throughout their working lives. They pay income and capital gains taxes on money they save and invest. They pay local property taxes on their homes. They pay various sales taxes whenever they buy something. They even pay steep federal taxes on gasoline and telephone use. Yet after a lifetime of burdensome taxes, the death tax punishes Americans one last time simply because they worked hard, saved, and invested to pass something on to their families.
# Bjorn Carey at LiveScience - Accidental Invention Points to End of Light Bulbs - paint a blue LED with quantum dots to get white light. No hint of cost or potential commercial release. [root]
Then Bowers and another student got the idea to stir the dots into polyurethane and coat a blue LED light bulb with the mix. The lumpy bulb wasn't pretty, but it produced white light similar to a regular light bulb.
The new device gives off a warm, yellowish-white light that shines twice as bright and lasts 50 times longer than the standard 60 watt light bulb.
