IPods in Redmond
Billy was a chemist
But now he's not no more
For what he thought was H2O
Was H2SO4.
# Fred (Reed) on Everything - Hunter Thompson: All Gone Now - lamenting the death of the and rejoicing in the life of the journaler of the sixties consciousness. [lrtdiscuss]
When Thompson blew his brains out, a door closed somewhere and you could hear the latch click. The main man had gone. Most of us can easily be replaced. There was only one Hunter Thompson. I'll heist one tonight to a fine, fine writer, a voice of his time, the embodiment of an age the like of which there never was and which, for good or bad, will never come again.

You can see why he ate his gun. Everything he hated has returned. Nixon is back in the White House, Rumsnamara risen from the dead, bombs falling on other peoples' suburbs. The Pentagon is lying again and democracy stalks yet another helpless country. This time the young are already dead and there will be no joyous anarchy. The press, housebroken, pees where it is told. But he gave it a hell of a try.
# Army Field Manual via Ideas for Liberty - Hand to Hand Combat - some good targets to focus on should you ever need to defend yourself with only the tools nature gave you. Mirrored here.
# Leander Kahney at Wired - Hide Your IPod, Here Comes Bill - Apple's IPod is such a good portable music player that over 60% of Microsoft's employees have one, even though their use is officially discouraged. Hehe. [pournelle]

I moved the /usr/portage
folder in my
Gentoo Linux distribution to a new volume. Backing up a disk image
to a disk file shrunk it by a factor of three. And I've gained an
appreciation for the way that Unix mounts volumes. This gave me, I
hope, enough space on my root volume to build
Open Office, so that's happenning as I speak, er... type. For a
product billed as portable Java, Open Office sure has a lot of C
code. Today, the Virtual PC clock is running about three times normal
speed. Yesterday, it was going about half normal. Go figure.
