From samizdata:
A citizen can hardly distinguish between a tax and a fine, except that the fine is generally much lighter -- G. K. Chesterton

Wiggy's Outdoor Gear bills themselves as "Manufacturer of the finest outdoor gear in the world." I had never heard of them before seeing an ad in the October issue of Soldier of Fortune, but reading about their sleeping bags on the catalog frontpage convinced me that they are run by someone who knows well of what he speaks. They sell clothing, leg/footwear, handwear, shelters, sleeping bags, backpacks, pet beds, and accessories. They use "lamilite" for insulation. They bill their Antarctic Parka as the "Warmest Parka Made in the World". They're not really an arms manufacturer, but their products are just as important as arms for survival, so I added them to my Arms Manufacturers page. I haven't used any of their products yet, but a half hour with their on-line catalog leads me to believe that the quote at the beginning of this blurb is likely accurate. [sof]

Arms & Ammo carries a full line of reloading supplies at low prices: brass, bullets, powders, equipment and dies, Leupold scopes and accessories, Benchmade knives, gun cleaning supplies, manuals. They also carry some loaded ammo. 5% premium for credit card payment. Added to my Arms Manufacturers page. [ar15.com]

World Net Daily - Iran paper compares Bush, Hitler - sounds pretty accurate to me. [wnd]

Preston Peet at High Times - Silencing the New Jersey Weedman - more on Ed Forchion's imprisonment for violating the terms of his parole by filming three commercials that were never aired. QuickTime versions of two of the commercials are available here. They're good. [cn]

The commercials feature Forchion standing in front of an American flag in a pot-leaf T-shirt, speaking about encroachments upon the First Amendment, the War on Drugs, and the benefits of medical marijuana. Working with Peter Christopher of Next Play Video (www.nextplayvideo.com), he planned to air them in four New Jersey counties on Comcast Cable. Though he had paid a deposit, signed a contract, and various media had reported on the upcoming spots, Comcast management decided they would not allow the commercials to air. This did not stop Forchion's parole officer from sending him back to jail.

Cannabis News - Health Canada Lets American Grow, Use Pot - Steve Kubby may legally possess up to 3/4 pound of cannabis to treat his adrenal cancer. Good news! [cn]

Garry Reed, The Loose Cannon Libtertarian - Pig in a Peignoir - many of the world's people hate the U.S. So our "leaders" think we need some "public diplomacy" to set them straight. Propaganda by any other name...

Following al Quida's airborne murder and mayhem assault on America our Commander-in-Hiding posed the rhetorical question, "Why do they hate us?" Rhetorical because he already had the answer: "They hate our freedoms." Not "They hate our troops tromping all over Sand Dune country." Not "They hate our policy of propping up despotic rulers." Not "They hate our imperialistic meddling."

A year later, our Prez is still singing his "That's my story and I'm sticking to it" tune. Unfortunately, Jack and Jane Muslim just aren't singing along. Demonstrations, boycotts and other expressions of disgust with American foreign policy persist throughout Mohammad Land. What to do? How do Compassionate Conservatives convince the average Ahab-on-the-street that they should love America?

...

So forget about Ali and Amal. What about Bob and Betty? The question, to libertarians, is not "Why do they hate us?" The question is "Why do America's leaders hate Americans?" With that as the question, the answer finally makes sense: "They hate our freedoms."

Julian Borger at Guardian Unlimited - White House in disarray over Cheney speech - our war-mongering VP goes it alone. Colin Powell plans to leave at the end of GW's first (and last?) term. [grabbe]

Sarah Boseley at Guardian Unlimited - Ecstasy not dangerous, say scientists - MDMA's deleterious effects may be mostly caused by dancing all night. [grabbe]

Drew Cullen at The Register - Walmart.com flogs $199 Linux OS PCs - Wow! [register]

chrisd at Slashdot - Java Media Framework Drops MP3 - so if you want to play MP3-encoded music in Java, you have to use JavaLayer. [/.]
