Today is the first Birthday of End the War on Freedom. Thank you Dave for creating "Manila" and making it available for our use via EditThisPage.com.

Three friends of mine from the Apple Cambridge Research Lab have created Clozure Associates. If you need some world-class Lisp software, give them a call.

{@Watch and Listen Carefully} is a nice poem that a friend sent via email.

Today at noon, Linda Hamilton will be on radio station WNTK with Scott Stevens out of New Hampshire. You can listen via the internet at http://www.wntk.com/.

View from the Heart - Voting In West Palm Beach: cartoon commentary on the intelligence of the folks who couldn't read a simple ballot. Hehe. [iowa]

Frank Ahrens at the Washington Post - Chicken McNoggin, Hold the Fries BugMeNot: a family in Newport News got a little more than they bargained for in a package of McDonalds "wings". Hehe.

Paul Craig Roberts at Capitalism Magazine - Modern Day Benthamites Herald An Era of More Power to the Government! Jeremy Bentham live in England in the 18th century. He believed in rounding up possible criminals before the fact, torturing them until they admitted something, and imprisoning them in workhouses "for the good of society". Amerika hasn't come quite that far, but both sides of the political spectrum are working hard to get there. Case in point, the recent supreme court ruling forbidding trolling for drugs with random highway stops. This particular ruling is in keeping with Blackstone's ideas of personal liberty and the fourth amendment, but the court still allows roadblocks to check for drunks. Hopefully, they'll shut down the seatbelt nazis.

There's a new article in The Libertarian series by Vin Suprynowicz:

  • And now ... armed guards at the DMV - Vin reminds us of the tenuous constitutionality of driving licenses. The Las Vegas Department of Motor Vehicles is requesting armed guards because the peons often get very angry after waiting in line for an hour and being told that their car will be impounded for failure to pay parking fines. The proper short-term solution is for the state DMV to refuse to anything about city infractions, a proper separation of government powers. The long-term solution is to eliminate driving licenses completely so that the police no longer have any reason to stop us and demand, "papieren, bitte".
In fact, drivers' licenses are thinly disguised police ID cards. (Does one forget how to drive when moving across town, or into another state? Then why isn't the license you got in another state the year you graduated from high school still as "good" as the high school diploma you earned that same year?)

    ...

The long-term solution, of course, is to abandon the whole system -- allow Nevada's citizens to travel the highways as they please without any government "licenses," "registrations" or "permits."

Todd R. Weiss at Computerworld - Iridium Satellite signs contract with Defense Department: The DOD is paying $72 million of our plundered money for 2 years of Iridium service. I say if the market won't support keeping those satellites in the air, let them crash and burn. I don't want to pay for them. [faisal]

AP via the Freedom Forum - Missouri lawmaker submits flag-protection bill: State rep. Sam Gaskill has introduced a bill in the Missouri legislature allowing a citizen to use force to stop another citizen from desecrating the flag. A similar bill that he filed last year never got out of committee. Hopefully, this one won't either. [unknown]

J.J. Johnson at Sierra Times - A Nation Divided: Tallahassee Warning Orders: J.J. is calling for armed protection of the Florida Legislature, on the grounds that the Klintonista are likely to attempt to shut down the special session. [sierra]

The Special Session starts Friday, December 8, 2000 in Tallahassee, Florida. If you're free this weekend, I'd suggest going there - with plans to stay until the work of the legislature is completed. I would also submit that if the Powers in Washington feel threatened enough, travelers may need to take more than signs with them.

Mel Young at KeepAndBearArms.com - Letter to California Legislators Pushing Total Registration: Mr. Young reminds Kevin Shelly that his gun-grabbing is treason, pure and simple, and that the penalty for treason is death. [kaba]

Tamara K. at KeepAndBearArms.com - The Day I Discovered That HCI Wants Me Dead: When Ms. K. was attacked by a prowler, her pepper spray slowed him down, but only a gun in his face caused him to turn tail and run. Absent the gun, no telling how much damage he would have inflicted. [kaba]
