Sheldon Richman at the Future of Freedom Foundation - Pearl Harbor: The Controversy Continues: some of the infamy may have been in Washington, but we may never know for sure.
Camille Paglia at Salon - The peevish porcupine beats the shrill rooster: The perpetual election, NOW hates Rush, the two anti-WOD candidates, Antonio Freeman's miracle catch, words from an Israeli about the mess over there, a crisis of demand for college literature programs, Gwyneth Paltrow vs. Kate Winslet, responses to her lament over the dying American hot dog. There's a new article in The Libertarian series by Vin Suprynowicz:
- Time to draw the line - Commentary on the case of Gail Atwater,
the Lago Vista mom who was jailed for not strapping her kids into the
car while they were driving down the road at 15MPH looking for a lost
toy.
Sure, most citizens would grant government some authority to restrict obviously dangerous behaviors on the roads. But this notion that officials can and should be empowered to stop and arrest and jail anyone, anywhere, because the authorities have some "compelling interest" in child welfare is very dangerous. In theory, don't we all collectively incur some of the "costs" if children aren't given properly balance diets? Should child welfare workers therefore be allowed to break in our doors at mealtime and conduct "spot vegetable inspections" ... without a warrant?
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety," Ben Franklin warned us in 1759.
David Royse at the Washington Post - Fla. Legislature To Pick Electors : they're meeting tomorrow. [mind]
demitria monde thraam at randomonium - 12.6.2000: Monde is back with good commentary on the escalating U.S. rape of Columbia. For the children, of course. [randomonium]
Lisa Lange at PETA - CBS Cuts PETA Commercial from Super Bowl Line-Up: CBS has refused to air an anti-leather commercial featuring singing cows. You can view it at CowsAreCool.com. It's kinda cute, IMHO. I don't eat cows, but I also don't plan on switching out of leather shoes any time soon. [unknown]
In a final bit of irony, the "pigskin" used at the Super Bowl itself will actually be made from a cow-footballs are now leather. (It takes 3,000 cows to keep the NFL well stocked for a season.)
