Dave's reference yesterday from Scripting News to my {@DaveNet Live 2/8/2000} story has catapulted my site from number 54 to number 47 in the Top 100 rankings. That single link was worth about 2000 hits. Wow!

Jon Udell at O'Reilly Network - Three Faces of XML in Zope: Services, Documents, Datastores This is Jon's keynote address to the Zope track at the 8th International Python Conference. He talks about Zope, XML-RPC, and how "XML is a way to extend the object system down into your documents."

World Net Daily says that on Saturday Lew Rockwell will report on "Sacajewea's mockery of money" in an article entitled "Fool's Gold". Return the U.S. to {@Real Money}.

Canoe via Cannabis News - M. Marijuana Refugee Ordered Deported Immediately. Canada has granted the U.S. extradition order for Renee Boje. She faces a mandatory minimum 10 year sentence for growing a vegetable. Her lawyer thinks he can delay the kidnapping by government criminals (my labels, not his) for "quite some considerable period of time", but it looks like the beginning of the end for her.

ABCNews - The Little Big Bang: Scientists at CERN have created "quark-gluon plasma", also known as the primordial soup, a new state of matter, apparently fundamentally different than the solid, liquid, gas, or plasma we currently know and love.

Mercury "is a new logic/functional programming language, which combines the clarity and expressiveness of declarative programming with advanced static analysis and error detection features. Its highly optimized execution algorithm delivers efficiency far in excess of existing logic programming systems, and close to conventional programming systems. Mercury addresses the problems of large-scale program development, allowing modularity, separate compilation, and numerous optimization/time trade-offs." It appears that Mercury is similar to Prolog, but is faster, finds more bugs at compile time, and compiles to C, "which it uses as a portable assembler". It has a module system. There is a tutorial. Something to investigate in my copious spare time (hehe).

Maya Stodte at IBM DevelperWorks - Ruby: a new language: "Ruby is an absolutely pure object-oriented scripting language written in C and designed with Perl and Python capabilities in mind." Ruby has a real garbage collector, unlike Perl and Python, which both use reference counting. It also supports operator overloading. Single inheritance only, drat. It is becoming popular in Japan.

Lots of proposed Java 1.4 APIs at JSR-000059 J2SE Merlin Release Contents. The review period closes on February 18.
