Release candidate 1 of JPython 1.1 has been posted. JPython is an implementation of the Python scripting language written in Java. It is nicely integrated with Java, allowing you to call Java from Python, call Python from Java, and even subclass Java classes in Python. I would have used it as the scripting language for my User Interface Manager, but I wanted to stay small, and it is a 900K jar file (as I remember). Instead, I'm using BeanShell, a Java interpreter.
Servlets.com - The Problems with JSP. JSP is Java Server Pages, a take-off on Microsoft's ASP (Active Server Pages). The author claims that template engines, e.g. WebMacro, are better than JSP. I don't pretend to understand the issues, though I've done a small amount of web programming in a JSP-like system using Progress as the scripting language.

CNN - House passes digital signature bill. This article doesn't say much about it. My guess is that it's HR 1572IH, The Digital Signature Act of 1999. This has not yet passed the senate, so it may never become law. It is a bill "To require the adoption and utilization of digital signatures by Federal agencies and to encourage the use of digital signatures in private sector electronic transactions." I didn't see any landmines in a quick read of the bill.
LinuxPR - Applix Announces Early Access Download of Applixware 5.0. It's x86 only, of course. Bummer.
CNET - Dell sells laptops with Linux: "The products, the Latitude CPX and the Inspiron 7500, come with Red Hat Linux 6.1 and are certified by Linuxcare."
Wired - The World According to Linux. A fluff piece mentioning SCO, LinuxWorld, TurboLinux, and Mainsoft. I mention it here only because it's nice to see Linux mentioned at Wired.
MIT Scheme 7.5.2. Nice to see Scheme in active development again. This is the third mention on freshmeat in the last little while.
