Michael Arrington at Techcrunch - Amazon has launched S3, a "Simple Storage Service". Accessible only as a web service. No user-level front-end. $0.15 per gigabyte per month plus $0.20 per gigabyte transferred. Objects are stored with developer-specified unique keys. They can be from 1 byte to 5 gigabytes in size. Access control provided. Bittorrent interface available to reduce bandwidth costs. No minimum fee and no start-up cost. [script]

Move over Google Drive, Amazon just stole your thunder (for now).

...

This is game changing.

See Rob Hof at Business Week for his thoughts on S3 as well. He says "it should put to rest the notion, still popular among a few analysts, that Amazon is just a retailer."
