The NYS Arms Collectors Show is taking place tomorrow from 9-5 and Sunday from 9-3 in the Convention Hall of the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany, NY. I intend to attend tomorrow morning.

Michael Cooper of the New York Times via the Albany Times Union - Killings rattle New York City Hall - city councilman James E. Davis of Brooklyn was shot and killed on Wednesday night by Othniel Askew, a political rival who had accompanied him to the city council meeting. The victim disarmers have, of course, removed the privilege of "officials" to enter without going through the metal detector. I wrote the following letter to The Times Union's editor:

Davis Shooting

The July 24 issue showed on the front page a black-clad policeman holding a pistol grip shotgun outside the Big Apple City Hall, as if to protect the people inside. Nonsense. The best and only effective protection that any of us has against an attack like Mr. Askew's is a handgun, worn within easy reach, coupled with training and regular practice in its defensive use.

Get rid of the metal detectors, and encourage all city council members to come armed to all meetings. There will be no more shootings. Get rid of the Sullivan Act, and encourage all New Yorkers to travel armed, everywhere and always. Our lives and our children's lives are at stake here. Personal security cannot be effectively delegated.

L. Neil Smith at The Libertarian Enterprise - Murder at the Pinnacle - a response to a 1997 shooting in the Big Apple that could have been prevented by the abolition of the Sullivan Act.

Joe Arrigoni at Geeks with Guns - Finding The Right Gun Accessories, or Why I Started TacticalCity.com - one man's opinion about accessories you really need to defend yourself well with a handgun. TacticalCity.com's Tips from Professionals section may become more interesting, but so far it contains only one article, Presenting from the Holster. Looks good to me, but having no experience drawing from a holster, my opinion means little or nothing. [geeks]

I'll cover shotguns and rifles in another article. For now, just keep in mind that your handgun is a last resort weapon. Meaning that if you have access to a rifle or shotgun, use it.

Jeff Dufour at The Hill - 'I'll probably win this argument': Rep. Ron Paul, the GOP's loner from the Lone Star State - Dr. Paul's Neo-Conned speech is getting attention on Capital Hill. Good. [libertycommittee]
