From The Federalist:
"Vote, n. The instrument and symbol of a freeman's power to make a fool of himself and a wreck of his country." -- Ambrose Bierce
and:
"I went to the store the other day to buy a bolt for our front door, for, as I told the storekeeper, the Governor was coming here. Aye, said he, and the Legislature too. Then I will take two bolts, said I." -- Henry David Thoreau

From Quotes of the Day:

"Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river." -- Nikita Khrushchev
and:
"The world is full of willing people, some willing to work, the rest willing to let them." -- Robert Frost
and:
"A gentleman is a man who can play the accordion but doesn't." -- Unknown

From kaba:

Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand-grenades are inherently democratic weapons. A complex weapon makes the strong stronger, while a simple weapon -- so long as there is no answer to it -- gives claws to the weak. -- George Orwell

Bill Walker at The Laissez Faire Electronic Times - Collars for Humans - freedom has lost, give in to the inevitable. Not! [grabbe]

Now, I know all the readers of this site are going to complain bitterly. How can I ignore the advantages of personal responsibility, property rights, self-defense, blah, blah, blah? Well, I'm not. A world of free individuals would be far superior to what we have. A world where individuals controlled their own bloodstreams, decided what their own children should be taught, carried their own weapons for defense, etc. would be a wonderful, exciting world. But that's not the worldline that we live in.

You have completely missed the point. I keep a gun in my house for exactly the same reason that I keep a fire extinguisher, a smoke detector, and a first aid kit, so that I am ready to respond to an emergency. In the unlikely event that someone intent on violence should break into my house, I will be able to protect my family. Yes, I do it for the children. I don't worship my guns, I don't live in fear, I simply practice the Boy Scout motto, "Be Prepared."

Funny thing, though. I'm more likely to be attacked while walking down the street. Isn't it part of my duty, for the children, to protect myself and my family there as well?
