From The Federalist:
"America united with a handful of troops, or without a single soldier, exhibits a more forbidding posture to foreign ambition than America disunited, with a hundred thousand veterans ready for combat." -- James Madison
and:
"Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." -- Sir Winston Churchill
and:
"If we ever hope to enjoy real and lasting prosperity in this country, we must redefine our view of the proper role of government. It is tempting during difficult times to demand that the government 'do something,' but a free society is defined by what its government does not do." -- Ron Paul

From office email:

"If you get to thinking you're a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else's dog around." -- Will Rogers

Kevin Ellul Bonici at Lassaiz Faire Electronic Times - A Dissenter's Fate in Fascist America: The Lessons for Europe - on the murder by government of Lynda Lyon, executed for killing a cop in defense of her husband's life while running to escape a SWAT team that was being sent to murder her.

The killing of Lynda Lyon is justifiable in the land of the free not only by state or federal decree. It is also justifiable by the American version of the Western punitive philosophy.

Let's briefly explore the philosophy behind this murderous concept. This philosophy justifies the killing of Lyon on the basis of three out of the four justifications of punishment. The first justification is that Lyon had to be used by the State in order to deter would-be cop-killers. The killing of Lyon aims to instill fear on whosoever tends to forget the US hangman and dares contemplate the killing of an agent of the Supreme Government. Consequent to Lyon's electrocution, therefore, "cop killers" are supposedly that much more aware of their fate -- as long as they find the time, that is, to rationally weigh the risks, costs and benefits when deciding on their idea of the day: 'Hey, why not kill a cop today!'

...

She remained, till the very end, and by all accounts, resolutely defiant in her rejection of the US system. And for the temerity of this show of arrogant dignity that even questioned the legitimacy of the authoritarian system, Lynda Lyon had to die. She had to be killed because she symbolized a defiant enemy that would not act submissively towards US authority. This fifth justification lies within the realms of the Rule of Power, not the Rule of Law. It emphasizes the concept that mortal humans must act deferentially before an immortal punitive god empowered to kill; a god represented by cops, prosecutors, judges and all the other agents of social control.

Libertarian Party Press Releases - Medical marijuana ads play role in defeat of U.S. Rep. Bob Barr - John Linder beat Bob Barr in the republican primary for their newly shared district in Georgia. I'm glad to be rid of this drug warrior. I wish he had realized that the drug war is evil as everything else I saw from him was pro-liberty.

There's a new Libertarian Enterprise issue, "In Memoriam, Sammy and Vicki". I'm late in reading it this week. [tle]
