Francis Fukuyama at Opinion Journal - The Fall of the Libertarians - claims that September 11 invalidated libertarian arguments about the harm of big government. Free registration needed to view. Bill Stone's response over at smith2004 was succinct and entertaining, though completely politically incorrect: [trt-ny]
This particular Statist's last name pretty much says it all ...
I posted the following response:
Mr. Fukuyama got it completely backwards. The September 11 terrorist attacks did not invalidate Libertarian arguments. They proved how correct they are. If it weren't for American hegemony the world over, government hegemony, the terrorists would have had no reason to attack us.

The rhetoric out of Washington is that they were attacking our way of life. Not! People don't kill themselves because somebody 5000 miles away is having too much fun. The hijackers were willing to kill themselves because they saw their friends die due to the United States acting as world policeman. Had we followed George Washington's advice and avoided entangling alliances, had we done what the Libertarians have been advising all along, minded our own business, no attacks would have occurred on September 11.

And what has government to do with sending firemen into buildings? Volunteer fire departments work fine in many rural areas. A privately run fire department, funded by insurance payments from its subscribers, could have responded just as well as the publicly funded departments did on September 11.

Is government needed to fight terrorists? Of course not. Private citizens are perfectly capable of protecting themselves, if government would just get out of the way and allow them to properly arm themselves.

And don't even talk to me about screening passengers at airports. If even a few passengers on each of the doomed flights had been armed and ready, the terrorists would have died within seconds of announcing their intentions. But, of course, no one was armed that day, because government has declared airplanes to be helpless victim zones.

Garry Reed, The Loose Cannon Libertarian - The Violence Virus - label something as a disease and government can collect huge amounts of money. They did it with cigarettes and guns, and are starting on junk food and violent television. None of it is any of their business.

Why don't the medical researchdogs study people who smoked all their lives but didn't contract cancer, emphysema, or heart disease? Why don't they study people like my wife who gobbles high caloric food but still can't push her weight much above 100 pounds? Why don't they study people who watch a lifetime of violent TV but never commit violent acts? Isn't it worthwhile to study disease-resistant people for clues that may help prevent the same disease in others? No. Because these are not real diseases and because such studies will not promote the powerdogs' agenda.

NRA - Remarks by U.S. Senator Zell Miller at 2002 NRA Annual Meeting - a speech given by a southern democrat, a two-term Governor of Georgia, to a room full of patriots. I've seen remarks about this speech over the last few days. Here's the transcript. It's definitely a political speech, fashioned to draw frequent applause from the crowd, but it's nice to hear from someone who calls himself a democrat. [kaba]

Mariella Savidge at The Morning Call - Jet fliers can carry knitting needles again - nail files, tweezers, nail clippers, syringes, safety razors, chains, and umbrellas are back in as well. Guns, knives, and spray repellents are still banned. [kaba]
