More Scopes

From kaba:
Our Founding Fathers were proud that Americans were trusted with arms because they knew that only when people are armed could they truly be thought of as free citizens. And that's where the circle closes. Those who want to deprive you of your right to keep and bear arms are intending to deprive you of your freedom, period. Like the criminals their policies encourage, these elitists know that it is always best to disarm victims before you enslave them. -- Charley Reese

From GOP News & Views:

Bill and Hillary Clinton leave their house and go out to eat. In the middle of dinner, Bill slaps his forehead. "Damn," he says. "I forgot to lock the safe before we left." Hillary replies "What are you worried about? We're both here."

I went to the gun store to look at scopes. I liked the Trijicon Reflex and ACOG sights. There's a long lead time on orders for them right now since the military is buying them for the war in Afghanistan, so if your local store doesn't have them in stock, you'll have to wait to get one. I liked the Reflex better than the Aimpoint. I especially liked the fact that the illumination is via tritium, which lasts for 10 years, whereas you have to change batteries on the Aimpoint. I wasn't particularly fond of the Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T 1-3x14mm Close Quarter/Tactical Scope. Well... there's no accounting for taste.

The find of the day, however, was the Springfield GE5089, 10x56 Mil Dot scope. "Fixed Power 10x56, Mil Dot Reticle with hands free unlimited rangefinding capability, 30mm tube, external target knobs, adjustable objective, illuminated Target Tracking™ green reticle, patented internal bubble level, and flip-up lens covers (not shown). Optional detachable 80mm sunshade available (shown)." The target knobs on this scope are really, really nice! And it feels like it would survive some harsh treatment. The GE5090, 4-14x40 would likely also be a good .223 scope, but I didn't look at one of those. Lighter and smaller with bullet drop compensation especially for .223 match ammo, but sadly missing the target knobs.

The events of September 11th, the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan, and economic troubles at home all serve to make 2002 a year of great uncertainty for America. The President already has warned the nation that 2002 will be "a war year," and economic recovery in the near future seems unlikely. It is easy for us to lose sight of the primary responsibility of our government during troubled times, because we naturally are anxious to have Washington eradicate terrorism and "fix" the economy. Yet we should not forget that peace and prosperity are fbest secured by a government that secures liberty for its citizens. The best formula for securing liberty is limited government at home and a noninterventionist foreign policy abroad.

AR15.com - The Ideal Rifle - if you were forced to rely on a single rifle for your survival, what would it be? The author concludes that you would want an AR-15 and gives details about how to deck it out.

The "ideal rifle" as described above is an AR-15 with a short (14.5 or 16) lightweight or M4-contoured barrel with 1/7 or 1/9 twist (latter preferred), flash hider, M4 collapsible stock, A1 carry handle receiver (with A2 aperture). Options can include illuminated optical sight and a weapon-mounted light. A scope can re-balance a front-heavy rifle (caused by tactical light). This configuration gives the greatest flexibility under a variety of conditions, and performs its duties as well as or better than any alternative.
