The Serval Project
The Serval Project is writing software to use the wifi in Android phones as a mesh network and enable voice-over-IP (VOIP) in areas with no cell phone reception, using existing cell phone numbers. If the mesh can find who you want to talk with, you can do it. I hope they couple if with end-to-end encryption.
No software available yet. The web site describes the project and asks for donations.
Neat idea! I wish them speedy success.
